AUGUSTA COUNTY, Va -- A hospice group, called SouthernCare, helps people transition in the last days of their life and they need more volunteers, especially in parts of Augusta County, Waynesboro and Stuarts Draft. They have about 20 volunteers, but most of them are in Harrisonburg and in Staunton.

Whitney Meyerhoeffer, SouthernCare's volunteer coordinator, said volunteers help give a personal touch to people who need it most.

“It can mean someone to talk to, someone to relate to and to share their experiences with, or someone, who, even if they're not completely cognitive, it's someone they can focus on, someone they can listen to music with, someone to distract them from what's going on,” said Meyerhoeffer.

Volunteers can help at SouthernCare in lots of different ways. They can do things like, make crafts or just sit with hospice patients in their final days. They usually go to homes or health care facilities to help people in hospice care.

The hospice care organization goes from Woodstock to Lexington.
