ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, Va. -- Rockingham Memorial Hospital workers are asking everyone to wear a face-mask to protect themselves and others from spreading and catching the flu this season. A strain not included in this year's flu shot is going around.

Staff put masks in the entryways for people to pick up and many people are noticing.

When Jane Parker came into the hospital to visit a friend's mother on Wednesday, she took extra precautions.

"I've had my flu shot and I hope that's going to keep me from getting it, but at the same time, you need to be cautious and careful."

Dr. Dale Carroll, the chief medical officer at RMH, said wearing a mask is one of the best ways to keep patients, visitors and staff safe.

"We encourage everybody, whether they've had the flu shot or not, to mask, to protect themselves,” said Dr. Carroll, “Many people will be going upstairs to visit immuno suppressed patients for whatever reasons, so also to protect the family members upstairs also."

That was exactly where Parker was going on Wednesday.

"I'm visiting the mother of a good friend, and when they offered the masks, I thought it was a good idea because you don't want to bring anything in to someone who's already a patient."

Parker also wanted to keep herself healthy.

"I have asthma, so I try to be very careful about trying to protect myself too."

RMH is offering face masks to anyone who visits and right next to the face masks is a hand sanitizing machine. These are the best ways to avoid the flu.

Even if you got your flu shot, you can still get the flu, but there are other ways to protect yourself.

Doctors say to stay home if you are ill and keep your family members home if they are sick. You should also get your family vaccinated and get a shot for yourself. Remember good hand hygiene. Wash your hands thoroughly and regularly.
