New numbers just out show that January home sales in the Valley are up by double digits compared to the same time last year. It's a part of a nationwide trend that's opening the door to some businesses adding staff.

Those businesses are home improvement stores, looking to hire dozens of temporary workers here in the valley. It's a direct result of what some are calling a housing boom.

John Colonna and his wife started house hunting back in October and closed on a house in Bridgewater two weeks ago.

"The economy is picking back up and business is really good and we definately want to stay in the area long term," said Colonna.

According to the just released Harrisonburg and Rockingham County Real Estate Market Report, January home sales are up 21 percent compared to January 2012.

John says his new house was built in the 1950's and needs a 21st century feel.

"Everything's pretty much original, so we might update the bathrooms and the kitchen," said Colonna.

John is just the type of customer home improvement stores are hoping to see come the spring. Lowe's tells News 3 it is looking to hire 26 temporary employees; Home Depot says it just hired 11.

"We stay pretty busy 'til june and then it starts to die off and gear down towards the summer, uh, winter months," said Marquis Lants, Home Depot Manager.

Lantz says his store is planting the seeds now ahead of its busiest month, April, when people come in to get gardening supplies. Colonna may just be one of those people.

"Probably need to get a mower and definately for the paint, brushes and all the things we need. Yeah, we'll probably be doing that. Going to one of those stores," said Colonna.

Those temporary positions at Home Depot and Lowe's can turn into a permanent position, boosting the economy even more.

As for John, he owns a franchise of the plumbing supply store Hajoca and he's looking to hire a few people.

If you're interested in applying, you can call Hajoca at 540-433-1827 or go by its Harrisonburg location at 1777 S. Main Street.
