The National Retail Federation said the average person spends about $80 on Halloween. On Wednesday, when a WHSV reporter asked Halloween shoppers how much they have spent this year, answers ranged from $5 to $150.

Local parents, like Brandi Sinnett, said they spend at least $100 on Halloween. That includes costumes for the kids, themselves and of course all the treats. Sinnett said it is okay to spend that much on the holiday if you can afford it.

"It's for the kids and my son is a little older now so he can enjoy Halloween, so we try to do a little more than we used to," said Sinnett.

Some people do not think it is necessary to spend a lot on Halloween. Amanda Dotson spent a total of $5 this year, since she is making her own costume.

"I've honestly made my costumes always,” said Dotson. “I don't spend money on a costume you're gonna wear one time. I think it's fun if you make it homemade, put more thought into it and make it more creative."

People, like Sinnett, have more than one person to spend money on and she said as long as the whole family has fun that is all that matters.

Valley neighbors could expect to see busy streets on Wednesday night. Forty-one million kids between the ages of four and 15 are expected to go trick-or-treating.
