HARRISONBURG --The City of Harrisonburg's effort to name a street after civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. It's been talked about for a while. Some suggestions were changing Reservoir or Vine street.

People were upset that the name change would change addresses. Renaming bridges was also brought up. Former City Manager Roger Baker said he thought it would be a good idea to name part of I-81 after Dr. King.

"That highway would become associated with Harrisonburg. People all over the United States, after they traveled this way a few times, they would remember Harrisonburg. If nothing else, at least the name of the highway," said Baker.

This change would not affect any addresses or I-81's name. If the city of Harrisonburg decides to rename a part of the interstate, it would have to contact VDOT and submit a proposal.
