A day before James Madison University's new president Jon Alger has his inauguration, he's marching forward, leading a walk with students, faculty and staff from campus to Court Square.

The walk is about the University, the city and the county coming together, bridging the gap.

Hard at work at the end of the walk, is Megan McConnell, a junior at JMU who is also an intern with the University Events Office.

"It's really just about welcoming President Alger to the city, into Harrisonburg and Rockingham County and to JMU," said McConnell.

For McConnell, the walk symbolizes the ties between the city and the University.

"Really wanting to reach out into the community and be involved in all different kind of aspects," said McConnell.

It took the group about 20 minutes to get to Court Square.

President Alger presented the keys to campus to Harrisonburg Mayor Ted Byrd and Rockingham County Board of Supervisors member Fred Eberly.

President Alger says the tradition key ceremony shows solidarity between JMU, the city and the county.

"We welcome you to our campus. We want to be good neighbors. We want to be part of the community. We want to be partners with you in everything that we do going forward," said Alger.

It's a message McConnell believes in.

"We appreciate how much the community has given us and we just want to give back to them as well," said McConnell.

President Alger's inauguration is Friday at 11:15 a.m.
