HARRISONBURG, Va -- Monday marked the 225th anniversary of the U.S. Constitution being signed.

An impersonator of the father of the Constitution, James Madison, visited the university that bears his name to remind students about the importance of this day.

James Madison University celebrated the anniversary by giving students copies of the Constitution and by testing their knowledge.

Sarah Everett, the Madison impersonator, said the Constitution is the blue print of American society. She said understanding the Constitution can educate students and help them serve their government. Everett said the document still impacts us today.

“I have no familiarity with the modern day because it's very different than my day. But I can assure you that no matter what age it is, it has an importance in our society because we still function in the constitution," said Everett.

Founding fathers of the Constitution adopted it on Sept 17, 1887.

JMU plans to take students to visit Madison's house in Montpelier on Saturday.
