STAUNTON, Va. -- Fewer veterans were unemployed in 2013 compared to 2011, but the number of jobless veterans is still very high.

That jobless rate dropped to 9.9 percent in 2012 from 12 percent in 2011, according to U.S. labor statistics. With more members of the military leaving Afghanistan by 2014, that number is expected to go back up.

Many people believe they can get into the armed forces and receive training that will prepare them for the workforce after service, but as many returning veterans discover, it might only be training for specific things.

“Veteran's of Foreign Wars encourages all the veterans who are returning and are looking for jobs, to look at what skill levels they might have that might help them to do a job search,” said Mac McCauley, commander of VFW Post 2216.

Some veterans may want to do a job for which they don't have the necessary skills. Luckily, there are other ways to get those skills after returning home.

“Blue Ridge Community College works with veterans to help them get their skill level up. The Virginia Employment commission will encourage them to do that.”

Even though it may seem daunting, the VFW guarantees that the jobs are out there. It might take some time, but they said no one should ever write off the service as an option.

“When we look at the military to gain job skills, experience, to see the world, to do things in the world, we encourage that for young men and women.”

More than 300,000 veterans will leave the military and re-enter the workforce every year for the next four years. is happy to provide a forum for commenting and discussion. Please respect and abide by the house rules:
