STAUNTON -- Youth in the Valley are finding a way to turn old bicycles into a gift for those who need it.

The program, called SPOKES, refurbishes bikes to give to neighbors.

The Office on Youth heads up the bike donation program. Employees let teenagers and kids fix the bikes and then the bikes are donated to needy kids.

Melissa Orndoff, the Office on Youth's director, said the goal is to teach kids about giving back.

They can take it from something that is effectively a piece of trash, and make it into something that will be useful for another member of the community. It gives them the pride in seeing that through.

Some bikes come from the city's police department from a list it keeps of unclaimed bikes.
