Local Thermal Shelters See Great Demand During Cold Weather

Low temperatures made it unbearable to be outside in the Valley Monday morning, and some local homeless people were in need of help.

The Harrisonburg Salvation Army said its family shelter was full, and extra cots were called in from an emergency agency to accommodate all the extra people.

Meanwhile, volunteers at Our Community Place in Harrisonburg said they offered fun events and programs to entice homeless residents to come into the thermal shelter.

They said food was especially in demand and donated items like blankets and jackets were going fast.

As temperatures hovered below freezing, those in need looking for a place to stay out of the cold said thermal shelters were more than a place to get warm.

"I'm currently in a homeless situation, and this is a place for us to go. If it wasn't for this, I'd be out in the cold and wouldn't have any food," explains Richard Entsminger, who was passing time at OCP.

"It's real cold. I come in for the warmth sometimes, and I've met a lot of good friends here," describes Gary Falls, another Valley resident in need.

OCP volunteers say donations are needed, and they are especially looking out for blankets and jackets this time of year.
