HARRISONBURG -- The renaming of Cantrell Avenue to Martin Luther King JR. Way is still up in the air. Harrisonburg city council members gave a presentation Tuesday which left many supporters disappointed.

The council originally scheduled a public hearing on the renaming but decided to postpone it for another date.

Karen Thomas is on the Martin Luther King JR. renaming task force. She said Tuesday's presentation on renaming something in Dr. King's name was disappointing.

""Big let down, I thought it was a big let down tonight. We came here prepared for a public hearing, we thought it was going to be a public hearing but we were told that we're going to speak even though it was on the agenda. But as you can see we weren't," said Thomas.

Many supporters with signs in tow, were at the meeting hoping to offer their thoughts. The presentation made by council member Abe Shearer said the process of renaming something after Dr. King is still in the works.

"I was very disappointed that it wasn't more talked and we weren't able to getup and talk and have comments," said Thomas.

Hermelinda Cortes lives in Harrisonburg and supports renaming Cantrell Avenue to Martin Luther King JR. Way. She wanted something more out of Tuesday's report.

"I'm a little confused about how much longer it's going to take," said Cortes.

Cortes said she's worried about the uncertainly of it all.

"It was my understanding that the task force already had a proposal about renaming Cantrell and Cantrell in particular," said Cortes.

In the end many people in the council room felt silenced.

Karen Thomas said the task force will meet Wednesday to discuss the matter. She said a councilman told her they can hold a public hearing at the next council meeting if they ask for it.
