AUGUSTA COUNTY, Va. - People living in the Swoope community were shaken after hearing that a bomb was placed in a mailbox.
The mailbox belongs to Jackie Montaro and the situation started yesterday morning when the mailman was making deliveries.
"I just moved here in June, I have friends, but it was just really upsetting because I just like to live a quiet life," says Montaro.
According to Jackie, when the mailman pulled up to her mailbox on Wednesday morning, he noticed smoke coming out of the box. He opened it and noticed a bomb like device.
The mailman then contacted the Richmond office, which then contacted Augusta County Emergency Services.
"I know the firefighters were here, the state police were here and I believe a bomb squad came," says Montaro.
No one was hurt, but what makes the situation even crazier is -- this isn't the first time something like this has happened here.
Last year, a pipe bomb exploded under a bridge just down the street from here and neighbors still don't know who was behind that ordeal. Jackie says that they've had issues before with area kids.
"He have had problems with kids just hanging out and drinking in their cars," says Montaro.
Either way, neighbors here like Bill Jones say they aren't letting the crime get to them.
"Crazy people are going to do crazy things and in this society that's the way things are these days," says another neighbor.
Wednesday was sure a day to remember for a quiet community shaken by crime.
