Martin Luther King, Jr. Way Signs Installed

HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) -- The old signs for Cantrell Avenue have been replaced with new ones naming the road Martin Luther King, Jr. Way.

The new signs have "Historic Cantrell Avenue" in smaller letters under the new road name.

"Certainly, some people might be used to the former street name but the new signs will actually have the new and the former street name on it so hopefully that will help eliminate some of the confusion," said Mary-Hope Vass, the public information officer for the City of Harrisonburg.

Crews finished installing most of the street signs this afternoon.

The new name will be made official on Jan. 1. and the change won't affect how emergency personnel respond to a call.

"First responders, They're all aware of the change and the emergency communications center is also aware so if someone calls with the former street name, they will still know exactly where to dispatch the call," said Vass.

The entire project cost about $26,000.

A ribbon cutting for the new road will take place on Jan. 20.
