Massanutten Resort Sees Record Ski, Snowboard Season

MCGAHEYSVILLE, Va. (WHSV) -- After a long winter, Massanutten Resort workers said they've actually set some records. Skiers at Massanutten enjoyed the last few minutes of skiing on Sunday before the ski and snowboard season came to an end.

"This was the longest ski season in the forty two year history of the resort," said Steve Showalter, with Massautten Resort.

The Bowen family packed up their gear and reflected on all the snow they saw on the slopes this year.

"It's great having the snow they make, but natural snow is so much better," said Jake Bowen, a skier.

The resort started making snow on November 12th, and they had a record-breaking 116 day snow season.

"It's been a great season, long, we got an early start. It's been nice and cold most of the season, good snow," said Mike Bowen, a skier.

A big draw this year was the feel of the slopes with that natural snow.

"Definitely a lot better because all this ground was covered with snow and it was basically no spare spots and lots of powder," said Lily Bowen, a skier.

School snow days in January drew hundreds of people. Some came from the Shenandoah Valley, while others came from surrounding states.

"We had the biggest number of participants in any season that we had so, you know it was just a great year. No January or February fall," said Showalter.

With spring already starting, some people, including Jake, are already making other plans.

"Be mountain biking a lot so that will be fun. That starts real soon. Hopefully we don't get too much more snow," said Jake Bowen.

Despite the season ending, managers have other big plans in the days to come. The resort will break ground on a new ski school building now that the season is over. is happy to provide a forum for commenting and discussion. Please respect and abide by the house rules:
