HARRISONBURG, Va --- The decision to post calories at McDonald's falls under the federal government's health care law. All restaurants with more than 20 locations will have to post calorie counts on their menus.

Several people ate at McDonald's in Harrisonburg Thursday for different reasons. Cheeseburgers, iced tea and side salads were some of the options customers chose from the menu. It is those different choices that Julie Thurnau, a dietitian, said can impact health through time.

“I think the more information we give the public the better, because now they have a choice,” said Thurnau.

Thurnau said regularly eating a Big Mac could hurt long-term health, but some McDonald's customers do not care about calories.

"I don't usually pay a whole lot of attention to nutrition facts myself," said Nora Breeden, a McDonald's customer.

Others say they will notice the change. That could impact what they order and decisions they make.

“Right away it made me think, 'Oh my gosh, I'm not going to order this. Look how many calories it is,'” said Michael Seth, another customer.

It all depends on decisions you make and if you focus on cost or calories.
