DAYTON -- Students at Pence Middle School honored the lives of the 26 people who died in the Newtown, Conn. school shooting.

The middle school students raised $1,600 to go toward Sandy Hook Elementary School's library. They also donated 26 books in tribute to the students who died. The books represent one of the victim's favorite things or causes he or she supported.

Students signed their names inside the books, along with a message of support to help those who survived.

Eighth graders said they want to send a message of hope to the students.

“We think that it will help them heal from what they've experienced. One day, I'm honestly hoping that they won't have to worry about this any more and that they'll feel good about it,” said Geno Stickley, a student.

Bethany Estes, another student said the donation may make students at Sandy Hook feel less alone.

“I hope that they feel joy and they know that somebody cares about them and that they're not by themselves in this situation and that the whole country, even people in the world, know that they're going through something really hard,” said Bethany.

Sandy Hook's librarian has passed along a message to the school saying the school wants to pass along its sincere gratitude and appreciation for the donation.
