ROCKINGHAM COUNTY -- Montevideo Middle School is in the top five schools in the Smash Make a Musical contest, but it still needs more votes to win. The contest selected 30 schools in the country to compete for the grand prize and Montevideo Middle School is the only Virginia school to make the competition.

The five schools with the most votes will receive a $3,000 Lowe's gift card to upgrade their auditoriums. Montevideo Middle School will use the money to upgrade a stage floor if it wins. Leaders of the theater department said the floor has cracks and gaps in it.

The contest has students excited, but they need the community's help too.

“They're excited about it. They tell me what position we're in and they let me know when they vote. They're spreading the word and putting it on their Facebook pages but we need businesses. We need other schools. We need the support of the entire community to make it work,” said John Knauf, the theater teacher.

Voting ends on April 10th. You can cast your vote on the Smash Make a Musical contest page. Just search for Montevideo Middle School and click the green vote button. You can vote once a day everyday until the contest ends.
