Murder suspect has first day in court.

Steven Moore

AUGUSTA COUNTY -- Steven Moore, from Stuarts Draft, was in court Wednesday for his first hearing. Police arrested Moore in the shooting death of Van Bell Jr. early Friday morning.

Moore selected his attorney in the case.

A woman in the home at the time of the murder said Moore showed up at her doorstep. Moore was her estranged husband.

Court documents show Moore hit Bell and the two started fighting. That's when the woman said Moore shot Bell. Police arrested him moments after the shooting happened.

Police have taken information from Moore's cellphone, including photos, videos and text messages leading up to the crime. They also took two guns found near the scene, one fully loaded and the other unloaded.

Moore will be back in court in May.
