HARRISONBURG -- Some neighbors will see changes come July. They will have new sidewalks.
On East Gay Street between Sterling Street to Summit Street, there are no sidewalks, but soon pedestrians won't have to walk on the street anymore.
On Monday afternoon, crews dug up dirt to install the sidewalks on the south side of the road.
The community development block grant funded the project, which costs nearly $54,000.
Doris Bryant, a neighbor, said the new addition will make it safer for pedestrians.
"Sometimes, people just fly through here and sometimes I'm glad I'm sitting on my porch when they're flying through here because I could be walking down the street myself and just out of the clear blue get hit," said Bryant.
The project is expected to be completed in the middle of July. The north side of the road will not get sidewalks yet because no funds are available. That's a project public works hopes to work on in the future.
