AUGUSTA COUNTY, Va -- An attempted murder case is headed to a special prosecutor because of its connection to gang activity.
Jerad Ross is accused of shooting Melvin Jordan outside Skyline Motel in Fishersville in May 2012. Jordan died about a week ago and it is not yet known if Jordan's death is directly related to the shooting or if the charges Ross faces could change.
Representatives for the Augusta County Sheriff's Office and the state medical examiner's office said finding out how Jordan died could take months.
A representative with the Augusta County Commonwealth's Attorney Office said the case has been handed over to Assistant Attorney General Phil Figura because of its connection to gang activity.
Ross spoke with jail employees about his affiliation with a gang in Maryland and it's because Figura specializes in gang-related court cases that he is now working on this case.
Ross is currently being held at Middle River Regional Jail.
