STAUNTON -- It is called a Yellow Jacket. And for almost the price of the iPhone itself, you can have one too. But be careful: it is not just a phone case. And its other use might shock you.
It is the iPhone case that packs a powerful punch - 650,000 volts - electricity you can use as a phone charger, or as a stun gun.
Staunton resident Megan Grantier said she would consider carrying one.
"Living in a town like this, not everything is safe," Grantier said. "If you're walking home or anything, you might need something to keep you safe."
Sgt. Brian Edwards of the Waynesboro Police Department said it could be a helpful tool, as long as you are not too eager to use it.
"You never want to let an attacker get that close to you so you can try the latest, greatest kung-fu movement or self-defense tool," Edwards said. "The best self-defense is not to be attacked."
The key with any method of self-defense, Sgt. Edwards said, is knowing how to use it - and not just in perfect conditions, but in the dark and in stressful situations.
"You want to always be mentally prepared," he said. "You don't want that attacker to get close to you, then you think, 'What am I supposed to do now?'"
The Yellow Jacket, with its stun gun on the top of the case, is designed to provide easy access when you need it. But, Grantier said, it might be too easy.
"I live in a house with my family," she said. "So if my little sister or someone touched it, that would end badly, if they got in the wrong hands."
The Yellow Jacket does have a safety switch in addition to the button you press to start the stun gun. The case costs about $140.
