HARRISONBURG, Va. -- Harrisonburg officially has its new city council members, as well as a new mayor! The members were all appointed on Wednesday afternoon in the council chambers. Some members will serve in new committees and positions this year.
City council members voted to appoint the new positions, including new Mayor Ted Byrd and Vice Mayor Charles Chenault. They also voted on which members would serve on all the city's subcommittees.
Abe Shearer is the newest and youngest member on the council. He said he's excited to learn more about how the city works and that he looks forward to serving on the finance committee for the city.
"Before I was a teacher I was actually a financial advisor in what's called a general securities principle, so I supervised other financial advisors, so my roots are in finance. I enjoy numbers. I enjoy data, so that's something I look forward to serving on," said Shearer.
Along with finance, Shearer will also serve on other committees, including parks and recreation, social services board and the Massanutten Regional Library.
The city council also voted to continue to hold their regular meetings on the second and fourth Tuesday nights of every month.
