HARRISONBURG, Va -- A movement, that started as a sign of protest, turned 1-year-old on Monday.

"The occupy movement is alive and well and kicking in Harrisonburg," said Paulette Moore, with the Occupy Harrisonburg group.

Moore said during this past year they have pointed out what is wrong with our country. Income disparities, corporations being out of control and politics being bought are some of the group's concerns.

“It really is the most important thing. This is our future that is at stake.”

Moore and others volunteer twice a week to fix a house for those without a home. She said she is not a carpenter, but she has already put up a wall.

"For me to be in this place and create something and contribute and say, 'I made that.' You know, I was part of making this house."

Beyond fixing a home, she hopes they can fix the economy. Dave Pruett, another member of the Occupy Harrisonburg movement, said they are starting by asking the right questions.

“Do we want people to serve the needs of the economy or do we want the economy to serve the needs of people?” asked Pruett.

Pruett and Moore said the group is working to find solutions, but it might not be as quick as people expect.

“They've asked so many times, 'What are the demands?' but our systems are broken. What we are doing is finding ways to create new systems."

Pruett said they are working on a document about ways to solve the economy and they hope to publish that soon. Members will be at the gazebo on Court Square in Harrisonburg Monday night to celebrate their first anniversary.
