WAYNESBORO, Va. -- Police estimate that it has been 11 years since the death of Karen Tait. Through this new initiative, the Waynesboro Police Foundation hopes to give Tait's family in the Philippines closure. They are seeking the public's help in putting together a fund for her remains to be returned to the Philippines, where she traveled from in 2000.

"Just under two years after coming to America, Karen Tait would be dead at the hands of her husband," said Kevin Blackburn at a press conference. He is a board member with the Waynesboro Police Foundation.

The Waynesboro Police Foundation Inc. is asking for $6,000 to be used for shipping Karen Tait's remains to the Philippines as well as for making other funeral arrangements.

They say it's because Tait's family in the Philippines cannot afford transporting her remains on their own.

"They live meal to meal. I can't stress that enough that they don't live like we live here," said Corporal Alyssa Campbell, who is a detective in Waynesboro.

Campbell is one of the individuals who worked to convict Tait's husband for killing his wife and leaving her remains in West Virginia. He was sentenced to 30 years in prison. Now she wants to see that Tait's remains return home to her loved ones for a proper funeral.

"Its been very challenging, its been very difficult, dealing with all of the, I guess red tape that you have to deal with in order to have remains cremated and sent to the Philippines," said Campbell.

"It is our mission here, 11 years after her death, to return Karen's remains back to her family in a final reunion, that will hopefully bring them closure," said Blackburn at Tuesday's press conference.

Tait is survived by a daughter who is now a teenager.
