Possible Budget Cuts Could Make it Difficult to Fight Wildfires

Federal budget cuts could go into effect as early as next week. Some cuts to the U.S. Department of Agriculture would make it difficult to fight wildfires.

A statement from the Secretary of Agriculture says homes would be more vulnerable to wildfires if sequestration happens.

Budget cuts may impact resources used to fight wildfires. Those cuts could mean flammable fuels on about 200,000 acres wouldn't be treated and that treatment may reduce forest fires.

About $2 billion worth of cuts could hit the USDA. The statement said if sequestration happens, that could mean furloughs or unpaid days off for employees. Those furloughs would disrupt USDA programs.
