WEYERS CAVE, Va. (WHSV) -- More than 1.5 million people are choosing to travel by air to get to their loved ones for Thanksgiving.

People who have booked flights with United at Shenandoah Valley Regional Airport (SHD) have been seeing delays for the past few days.

The runway is clear, so there are no issues with snow or ice, but executive director Greg Campbell said the delays are because of other major hubs in the Northeast.

Conditions at Dulles Airport in Washington, D.C. and other major hubs in the Northeast are causing delays locally.

Flights Wednesday afternoon were delayed about 20 minutes, while one flight Wednesday morning was delayed a couple hours.

SHD did have to cancel at least one flight yesterday.

To make connections, United workers are scheduling people on canceled flights for buses and taxis.

Airport workers encourage passengers to call ahead to check for delays.

"Most everyone has been in good spirits, you know the holiday and you know they just want to get to where they're going and of course the airlines been doing their best to make sure they get them there as close to on time as they can," said Campbell.

Campbell also said that Thanksgiving Day won't be such a busy travel day; however, they've had flights booked full since Friday and expect that to continue. is happy to provide a forum for commenting and discussion. Please respect and abide by the house rules:
