HARRISONBURG, Va. -- A proposal in Rockingham county could minimize overcrowding at the Rockingham-Harrisonburg Social Services and Health Department building.

The Director of Social Services said the proposal would allow them to have foster care and child social services into one building.

The Rockingham County Board of Supervisors is considering the proposal by Nielson builders and Don Driver said they will also be taking others until may first.

Right now, they need more office space and more space for conference rooms.

They actually had to convert one meeting room they were using for families to office space because of the overflow.

The current proposal would mean renovating the old Social Security Administration building across the street and putting more offices there.

Driver said at this point, the Board of Supervisors will look at what's feasible.

There are also other things that the department would like to work toward.

"As we've grown and the space has gotten tighter over the years we've looked at different options trying to work with community services board as well as the Health Department to try to look at how we can develop kind of a community center and we still would be able to do that at some point down the road. At this point we're just trying to alleviate what's a pretty critical crowding issue," Driver said.

To give an idea of space, Driver said when they moved in in 1996, there were about 75 staff members and now there are about 160.

After May 1, the Rockingham County Board of Supervisors will be looking at all of the available options. is happy to provide a forum for commenting and discussion. Please respect and abide by the house rules:
