The Harrisonburg Salvation Army's Red Kettle campaign is officially over.
Thanks to generous donations this holiday season, needy families in the Valley have something to smile about.
That's because they raised more than $140,000.
Captain Duane Burleigh says that's more than last year's total.
The money will go to the local Christmas program distribution, as well as the homeless shelter, and social service programs.
Burleigh admits it was a big goal due to the state of the economy, but he was glad that the community stepped up to help.
"I'm so glad that I'm raising my children in this Valley. It's a place where people care about their neighbors. My slogan all year long has been 'We'll be the hands and the feet, but this community is our heart,'" said Burleigh.
Captain Burleigh thanked everyone for donating to the campaign, including businesses that let volunteers ring bells in front of their stores.
