WHSV Claims 2012 Farm Bureau Journalism Award

CHANTILLY, Va -- WHSV-TV won top honors in the television category at the 2012 Farm Bureau Journalism Awards for the second year in a row..

WHSV won the award for coverage of agricultural stories impacting the farming community. Reporters visited numerous farms and farm families to report on a variety of important subjects.

A hot topic for the farmers we spoke to was the divide between corporate and smaller farms. Farming is efficient for land, but that competition could kill smaller farms.

"It's efficient in that way, but economically not so much as with the bigger farms," said Charles Drumheller, a cattle farmer.

Some of the stories we have covered during the past year, which impacted the farming community, have been: the impact of the increase in corn prices on the Shenandoah Valley farmers, extreme heat affecting wine grape crops, how to protect livestock during hurricane season and many others.

The judges wrote about WHSV's coverage, “a comprehensive group of farm subjects that keeps Valley viewers informed.”

With nearly 150,000 members in 88 county Farm Bureaus, Virginia Farm Bureau Federation is Virginia’s largest farmers’ advocacy group. Farm Bureau is a non-governmental, nonpartisan, voluntary organization committed to protecting Virginia’s farms and ensuring a safe, fresh and locally grown food supply.

Augusta County leads Virginia with the most farm acreage. More than 280,000 acres are farmed in the county.
