PENDLETON COUNTY, W. Va. (WHSV) -- Construction started for a new school building in Pendleton County.

The current Franklin Elementary School has been in use since 1951 and excitement filled Franklin Elementary School as Principal Rick Linaburg announced the groundbreaking of the new building.

"The reason we are getting a new school is you," said Linaburg.

This current school is 62 years old and Linaburg remembers being a student here like the ones in front of him.

"I entered this school for the first time as a first grader in 1963," said Linaburg.

He said the age of the building is starting to show and there are not enough outlets in the school.

"With today's technology and so forth. It makes it hard to accommodate the needs that we have technologically," said Linaburg.

The $12.6 million project will also help with some space needs.

"We will have a gymnasium for our physical education so we are not using a multipurpose room that doubles as a lunch room and P.E. facility," said Linaburg.

But more importantly it will alleviate safety concerns.

Right now, students like Emma Thompson have to cross the street to go to the playground.

Trucks usually load and unload near the school entrance.

"Some kid could be late and go outside later and they cannot look across the street and there can be a car coming. Something like that," said Thompson.

Linaburg said this is something future generations will not have to worry about anymore.

The School Building Authority helped fund the project and the principal said the school had been advocating for a new building for 10 years.

The construction is expected to be completed in December 2014.
