PAGE COUNTY, Va. (WHSV) -- A preservation group asked a judge to put the demolition of a historic school house on hold, but a judge in Page County ruled against it.

John Sanford loaded up his car with what he considers pieces of history.

"I have been here getting bits and pieces and doors and samples of the woodwork for future reference," said Sanford.

These pieces come from the 1881 Luray Graded and High School building.

"I'm going to put in my barn and save them," said Sanford.

The building will be demolished soon as efforts from the Preserve our School Foundation failed in court.

The group filed an injunction to stop the county from demolishing of the building.

For foundation member Chester Taylor, the building could have been saved.

"It is a total tragedy to tear this building down. It is a historic building unquestionably with future value," said Taylor.

The county attorney said the board did not see any future use for it due to its deterioration.

The building used to house some Page County government offices.

"We were ridden with bugs and bites and walls cracked, plaster falling out the ceiling," said Penny Gray, the County Treasurer.

Gray now works comfortably at the new building next door.

"It's really sad to think that is going to be torn down, but I think it is a good wake up call for future generations to take care of what we have so things like this don't happen," said Gray.

Sanford hopes some of what he recovers can be put to good use in the future.

"Maybe someone will win the lottery and we can build another one brand new," said Sanford.

The county will keep the iconic cupola of the school house, but it will replace the rest of the building with a parking lot.

The county's attorney says it is part of a zoning requirement from when the county agreed to build a new government center. is happy to provide a forum for commenting and discussion. Please respect and abide by the house rules:
