El Charro, Corgan's Publick House and Steel Heart Tattoo are just a few of the scores of new businesses popping up in the city of Harrisonburg.
"We're very encouraged. The economic downturn has been tough, but we've fared quite well, knock on wood. Last year ended up being good the city and we hope that will continue into the new year," said Brian Shull, director of economic development for the city of Harrisonburg.
Terrence Kay is also hoping for a bright future. He moved from Fredericksburg, VA to Harrisonburg for a better opportunity. He found one at El Charro.
"It's been great, it's been really busy all the time," said Kay.
El Charro opened along Port Republic Road in November. Managers hired 12 new employees. Starting the business had its challenges.
"There's so many things that people don't take into consideration, especially if you're trying to do a good job. Every detail has to be perfect, from employees down to little imperfections around the restaurant," said Miguel Gallardo, manager of El Charro.
Katharine Corgan opened Corigan's Publick House in December and hired nearly 30 people.
"Many of our employees are students, but we do have quite a few that were not students looking for full-time work. They are very happy to have a job, and we're very happy to have them," said Corgan.
Business owners all have one agenda-, which is helping to put people back to work.
Virginia's unemployment rate stands at 5.7 percent. That's a decrease from 6.5 percent the year before.
In Augusta County, 5.1 percent of people are unemployed.
In Rockingham County, 4.7 percent, or nearly 2,100people don't have jobs.
More than 1,500 people, or 6.3 percent, are out of work in the city of Harrisonburg. Last year 6.8 percent were unemployed.
Kay offers this advice.
"Just keep looking, keep your head up and do the best you can do," said Kay.
