Sewage Pump Station Issue May Require Taxpayer Money in Elkton

ELKTON, Va. -- Sewage employees in Elkton are finding unexpected items that are causing clogs.

Most of the town's sewage pumps through Elkton's north lift station and now town leaders are asking that people be more careful about where they put their waste.

Town Manager Kevin Fauber said that in the last month, sewage workers with Inboden Environmental Services have seen everything from diapers to mop heads to rags.

Fauber said residents need to stick to limiting things that they throw into the toilet to toilet paper.

When things like rags and odd items are thrown into toilets, it could actually cost tax payers a lot of money.

There is one pump underground at the station with a back up pump that doesn't run unless absolutely needed. The pump station sits at the corner of Shenandoah Avenue and north stuart avenue.

Because of the terrain, this is the main pump station that serves the Elkwood subdivision and the surrounding area.

If a blockage isn't caught, it could burn up the motors and the pumps. In the last few weeks, Fauber said a recent inspection shows that one pump is broken.

"It ultimately costs the citizens if we have to replace a motor and a pump I mean it can range anywhere from three to five thousand dollars," said Fauber.

The pump station is inspected daily. Although blockages can cause an overflow of sewage, this has not happened at this pumping station. Another woman seemed amazed that odd items were discovered.
