BROADWAY, Va -- Tammy Young has fought this stink bugs all summer.
“When you go outside, they'll stick to your clothes, and you'll bring them in. If you open the door, they'll fly through the door. You don't even see them coming in,” said Young.
That is a problem for Young, who had surgery this week, and she said the stink bug problem means more stress.
“It's another problem on top of a problem.”
Exterminator Carl Hohnke Jr said stink bugs come out during summer months and they look for warm places, like homes, to live. Recently, he has been busy answering his phone.
“It's been ringing pretty steady for stink bugs,” said Hohnke.
Minnick Pest Control employees said they usually get about 10 phone calls about stink bugs a year, but just in the past five weeks, they have gotten five phone calls for what they say is a growing problem in the Valley.
“People want you there, like, yesterday. Once they hit, they are a pain. They are really something to deal with.”
Young said the problem has spread into her neighborhood. It has affected her neighbors, whom she treats like family.
“I think of them just like I do myself. I just want the problem dissolved,” said Young.
A typical treatment for the bugs costs between $150 and $300. Young said she cannot afford to exterminate so she finds ways to deal with them herself.
“When I see them, I gotta get up and get them, because, it's like, if you see one, you turn around and there's another.”
Exterminators said the best way to fight the bugs is to spray inside and outside your house. They say there should be fewer stink bugs as we head into the winter months.
