HARRISONBURG, Va -- Sharnell Myles, a James Madison University student, woke up to find hateful words on her apartment door and on Tuesday, she used that experience to bring attention to intolerance.

Myles found a hateful message on her door, which she said discriminated against her race.

"Well when I opened my door and saw it I was just in shock and then I didn't know what to do, so I called my roommate to tell him about it and he was just outraged," said Myles.

Students took a stand against this behavior with songs, purple ribbons and powerful signs. More than 50 people gathered at JMU to bring awareness to the recent hate crimes that have happened in Harrisonburg.

Other students, like Amanda Leizaer, found out about the crime and decided to bring attention to it. Leizaer created a Facebook page to organize a group of people to spread a message against intolerance.

"I'm happy people came out because now they're more aware of it and it goes beyond our class now,” said Leizaer.

Students hope their message against hate crimes will catch on everywhere.

"Everything isn't all peachy-keen and hate is all around us and we do have to be aware and make others aware that it still goes on," said Myles.

Myles said she was glad her experience brought all people together to make a difference.

Myles said she was disappointed the people responsible for this crime were never held accountable. She said she was surprised so many people are still ignorant towards minority groups.
