HARRISONBURG -- It's been a busy day for math classes throughout the Valley because it was Pi Day!

Students at Skyline Middle School were busy with activities that showed them how to calculate the famous symbol.

They measured all different circles around the classroom and learned how to get pi, or 3.14, by dividing the circumference of the circle by its diameter.

Faye Obenschain, their teacher, said this will be helpful for the math Standards of Learning test.

"It's really cool when they discover what pi is rather than us just telling it, and so that's why I always do this activity because I think it's so important for them to discover rather than us just explain to them. They can remember better when they can do hands on activities," said Obenschain.

Obenschain said she hopes these activities will help her students remember how to calculate pi. She said it's always fun seeing them discover that the symbol matches the March 14th date.
