ELKTON, Va -- Josh Gooden was just elected to the Elkton Town Council, shortly after graduating East Rockingham High School, but it is his young age, which he said will really help the council make better decisions for the community.
Josh Gooden is now a freshman at Bridgewater College. He said he may be young to be a part of Elkton's Town Council, but it is something he has always wanted to do.
"I've always been interested in being on the council, since middle school, and I've always attended the meetings for years and years, and I just find it interesting on how our town works and runs," said Gooden.
Theodore Pence has been on the town council for 10 years. He said Gooden will be a great addition to their local government.
"I think somebody that young can really help the community out and they must feel the same way because they voted for him and he got more votes than anybody," said Pence.
Gooden got more than 600 votes this election and that was why Pence said it is clear this small town supports him joining the council.
Pence has known Gooden for Gooden's whole life and he agrees with the town's decision.
"Josh is a good boy and I like him and I'm waiting to work with him as much as I can."
Gooden said he is excited to work with the other town council members too. He said his young age will bring a new perspective to the council and that will benefit Elkton.
"I think it's a really good balance to have older generations and younger generations work together to make good decisions," said Gooden.
Gooden said he is ready to balance his student-life with his town council responsibilities. He will be working on the town council for the next four years.
