Lock your doors because thieves are on the loose. Rockingham County Sheriff's Deputies are looking for thieves targeting several neighborhoods.
Neighbors in the Battlefield Estates Subdivision have each others backs. Hugo Wills is one of them.
"We try to look out for one another," said Wills.
When Wills found out someone stole items out of one of his neighbor's cars, he went into action.
"I knew that we had a neighborhood website that we use. It's like a Yahoo! group and I simply went on there and emailed all our neighbors to let them know be on the lookout, be a little extra cautious," said Willis.
Battlefield Estates isn't the only neighborhood affected. Cars in Barrington and nearby Cullison Court were hit as well as South Mountain Village in McGaheysville. All targets of thieves, all with common themes.
Rockingham County Sheriff Bryan Hutcheson explains, "They were all involving unlocked vehicles, took place in the nighttime, predominately in residential areas."
Hutcheson says the items stolen were in plain view. A locked door could have stopped the crooks.
"They can walk by. The only thing stopping them from looking in your car is pulling the handle. Basically if you're going to leave the door unlocked, you might as well leave the door open" said Hutcheson.
Something Hugo Willis already knows.
"We're very fortunate to live here, but you can't let that comfortable feeling get the better of you," said Willis.
The sheriff says there are no leads in this case. If you know anything that can help, call the Rockingham County Sheriff's Office at 540-564-3800.
