LURAY -- Two people were rescued from the river by South Page Valley Road and Bixler Ferry Road. The river is going to continue to rise throughout Friday night. Around 5:30 p.m. first responders received a phone call that two people were trapped.

The Luray Volunteer Rescue Squad was just one of many on the scene. The two victims were trying to push a kayak out in the river. The water got too rough and they lost control. The 30-year-old man held on to a tree branch for 40 minutes while also holding onto a 5-year-old girl.

Lt. Christopher Molina said something like this doesn't happen often.

"Most of the time I try to stay calm. It is emotional when it involves younger people or children. But just try to stay calm and focused and worrying about the safety of our crew members as well as performing the rescue," said Molina.

The Luray Volunteer Rescue Squad said it took more than 45 minutes for the rescue. Details on the victims condition are still unknown.
