Two large companies in Virginia announced layoffs on Tuesday.
American Woodmark is reducing its production capacity and making other cost savings moves because of the continuing housing slump. The Winchester-based cabinet maker is closing a component facility in Hardy County, W.Va., and a lumber operation in Hazard, Ky.
Pitney Bowes is closing a call center in Chesapeake. Sixty-four workers will be laid off. The company says the layoffs will come in three waves, with the first starting in February. The center will close in june.
However, there is some good news when it comes to jobs. Power tool maker Stihl plans to double the manufacturing capacity of its Virginia Beach plant. The expansion is expected to create 52 jobs.
