STAUNTON, Va. (WHSV)-- A tractor-trailer crash Wednesday morning shut down I-81, killed one person and shut down the road for hours.

Bryan P. Ingalls, 55, of Manchester, N.H. died after an accident involving two tractor-trailers.

The two vehicles were traveling southbound, both in the right lane, when the first slowed for traffic, according to state police. A second tractor-trailer, immediately behind the first, failed to slow and struck the first one from behind, according a preliminary report. The impact caused the second tractor-trailer to jackknife. Ingalls, the driver of the second one, died at the scene.

The driver of the first tractor-trailer was not injured, but the crash caused the trailer to spill its contents. It was carrying drums of liquid chocolate that ruptured in the crash.

Both drivers were wearing their seat belts.

Traffic was detoured off the interstate while crews worked all day to clean up the accident. The detour had drivers get off at exit 220 and then get back on I-81 at exit 213 in Greenville.

The Virginia Department of Transportation said traffic backups on the interstate stretched seven miles at one point this afternoon. is happy to provide a forum for commenting and discussion. Please respect and abide by the house rules:
