HARRISONBURG, Va. -- James Madison University's board of visitors meeting ended late Friday afternoon.

During part of the meeting, Jonathan Alger, the president of JMU, talked about how he's using the university's listening tour as a way to improve the campus. Alger said feedback from the multi-state tour includes a need for more private funding.

Senior Director of Communications Don Egle said it's also important to make sure students are a priority.

"The focus on a student centered environment is one of the things JMU is done a really great job of is really focusing on the student both in the classroom and out and that has been very prevalent in the feedback we've been getting on the Presidential listening tour," said Egle.

While donations increased nearly double this fiscal year, less than 10 percent of the alumni community as a whole is giving back.

Hundreds of people have given the university direct feedback. Those comments include a desire for more interaction between students and teachers and a focus on public service.

The university is also preparing a strategic plan, which will start in 2014. That plan includes focusing on academic quality and expanding online opportunities.

"It's important for us as we pursue online education that the quality is central to this discussion. For example, we need to make sure that what we're delivering for the online environment is consistent to what we offer in the classroom."
