AUGUSTA COUNTY, Va. (WHSV) The Virginia Department of Transportation took the time Thursday to hear the public's comments about the six year improvement program.

Delegate Dickie Bell, a representative from senator Tim Kaine's office and a few other members of the General Assembly were just a few of the people in the audience at Thursday's hearing.

Many talking about truck traffic on roadways and completion of long term projects. Many say better roads and highways would mean better economic development.

The list of concerns for motorists centered around truck traffic on highways like U.S. 220.

Prior to the hearing, VDOT gave people the chance to see some of its new projects listed in the current program. Not everyone is looking forward to some of the changes listed.

Dubose Egleston is opposed to the Waynesboro Southern Connector. He has suggested an alternative that he thinks will be cheaper and better for the environment.

"I think it's just an ill conceived route when there are better routes or different routes," said Egleston who is a former Waynesboro Council member.

"This is a really important project for fostering the commercial and industrially development throughout the region," said Kevin McDermott with SAW MPO.

Another important road that is in the works for Augusta County is the one that will allow for people from Staunton to get to Augusta Health more quickly.

According to VDOT, the project is fully funded and should be completed by 2015.

The public will have another chance to give their input during the summer after its release.

If you missed Thursday night's hearing you can submit your comments by mail up to December 6, 2013.

The drafted version of the six-year improvement program will be out in the spring.
