It's been raining all day and the temperatures will drop tonight. Roads may also be icy later tonight and early tomorrow morning.
VDOT officials say their main concern tonight is black ice.
"It looks like our chance of snow is later tonight,” said Don Komara, Harrisonburg VDOT Official. “We're going to be ready for it. The ground is warm so hopefully as it falls and it will melt, but we're going to have people out there to treat the roads and stay on top of it."
The salt rock mix will help drivers stay on top of any ice on the roads, but VDOT officials say in a storm like tonight's, they cannot pre-treat the roads with brine.
"In a storm like this, that doesn't help you as much because the brine is twenty-three percent salt and the more rain that runs on it, it keeps on further diluting it and diluting it until you don't really have any of that action,” said Komara. “And the temperatures are not going to have them freeze right away anyway."
Once the moisture on the roads begins to freeze then the VDOT trucks will spread a mixture to help cars travel on slick areas like curves and bridges.
"We will have people out so that in the morning they can check all those places and make sure they go and hit all of those things before the day starts tomorrow,” said Komara.
Drivers need to be extra careful on the roads tomorrow morning and especially on secondary roads.
