AUGUSTA COUNTY -- Virginia's governor stopped by the Valley on Friday to help announce and celebrate economic growth in the county.

Gov. Bob McDonnell made a few stops in the Valley on Friday. He celebrated Augusta Health's new heart and vascular center.

“This is yet another testament to those advances in how we've built off of some of the disciplines that we're already good at to put it into practice now to literally, let's save lives here in the Shenandoah Valley,” said Gov. McDonnell.

Augusta Health used local contractors to build the center. That put people to work and gave the hospital the option to expand. Gov. McDonnell said it will make a difference in the Valley.

“I, like most families here, have been touched by both heart disease as well as cancer. I bet if I went around the room, probably all of you have a family member or close friend who have been touched by one of the two killers.”

Less than an hour later, Gov. McDonnell went to the future site of Shamrock Farms. It's a nationwide dairy company bringing 60 jobs to the county.

Augusta County Board Supervisor David Karaffa said the company's vision suits the county well.

“When the people elected our current board of supervisors, we set in motion a vision for this county, one that embraces who we are and pushes forward in the investment of our future. That vision continues to be put in motion right here in Verona,” he said.

Gov. McDonnell said more jobs will mean more growth for Virginia.

“It is a critical part of our economic development strategy, and the good folks of Augusta County who you've heard from really get that, and that's why they were a big part of this deal.”

The Augusta Health Heart and Vascular Center is expected to open for patients on March 25th.

The Shamrock Farms building will cost about $50 million to build.
