Valley Democrats React to Paul Ryan Visit

ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, Va --- Supporter of the Democratic Party Boyd Reese went to the Rockingham County fairgrounds to counter support for Republican Vice Presidential Candidate Paul Ryan.

Reese was one of only four people who showed up to get the Democratic message out.

“I think it's important to have an alternative presence, to let people, to remind people that there's another option,” said Reese.

Reese and his team expected more support from other Democrats. He said holding the Ryan speech on a week-day during mid-afternoon might have led to smaller turnout than normal.

“I wish there were more people here, but one's enough.”

Harrisonburg's mayor, Richard Baugh, who is also a Democrat, wanted to influence swing voters.

“Our hope is to talk, not to the loyalists out there, but the folks out there who are still looking at the candidates, still weighing the pros and cons, still making up their minds,” said Baugh.

Reese hoped his presence will make a difference in November.

“Every vote is going to count in this election. People who think, 'Well, it's just a toss up so I'm not going to get involved.' I think they're wrong,” said Reese.

Democrats at the rally said they were asked to leave the fairground's property at the start of the rally. They set up just outside the property instead.
