AUGUSTA COUNTY, Va. -- People in the Valley don't have to worry about where to find the flu shot. Local hospitals are stocked and ready to administer it.

“I don't remember us ever running out of tests or running out of swabs or this mad rush for vaccines like there has been this. So, I would definitely say it's been a worse year,” said Amanda Wilson, a nurse practitioner at Augusta Health Convenient Care Clinic.

Augusta Health has three Convenient Care Clinics located at Walmarts in parts of the Shenandoah Valley. Clinicians administered 94 flu shots between Thursday and 12 p.m. Friday. Business was so steady, they needed to bring in 250 more shots from the hospital to the Staunton Walmart Friday morning.

“A lot of people have said the news has kind of scared me. A lot of people have said they have never gotten the flu shot before,” said Wilson.

So far this year, Augusta Health diagnosed more than 550 cases of the flu. The Staunton Walmart clinic gave 1400 more shots this year than last, but that doesn't mean people aren't still getting sick with the flu.

Debra Melton's son was unlucky enough to have flu symptoms.

“His face hurts. His mouth hurts. He's been running a fever. He's not doing the best,” said Melton.

She hopes he feels better, but she knows it's hard to avoid the flu with three children in school.

“He told me he's going to go straight back home and go to bed. With three children at home it's kind of hard because they're in school and they're always bringing germs home.”

Now that her son joins the millions affected by this flu season, Melton has some advice for everyone out there.

“You need the shot. There's different types of flus out there and you need to get the flu shot. Flu shot, pneumonia shot. It's for your health and your family.”

Augusta Health's Convenient Care Clinics recently started seeing children as young as 2 years old, so even the Valley's youngest need to get a flu shot. is happy to provide a forum for commenting and discussion. Please respect and abide by the house rules:
