In honor of Veteran's Day, local veterans set off a canon at the Old Harrisonburg High School.

Sargent Charles Carter had a very important roll in the ceremony. "My job is to pack the canon,” said Carter. “Everybody loves that canon."

Carter was an Airborn Ranger. "I was dumb enough to jump out of perfectly good airplanes. I was young and dumb," said Carter.

When Veterans Day comes around, Sargent Carter remembers one soldier. "The man who saved my life. When he got it, I could not do anything to help save his life,” said Carter.

Richard Knupp served during the Vietnam War. Knupp said that this day always brings mixed emotions of pride and remembrance of friends he lost during war time.

"The four from my crew that went missing in Vietnam. 'll never forget those guys. I flew with them and it just sticks in your memory,” said Knupp.

Carolyn Edlind was at the celebration with her son and grandson.

"This is a very special day for many reasons, but we are so thankful for our soldiers and all that they mean to us,” said Edlind. “We are thankful to the families and pray that they stay in tact." is happy to provide a forum for commenting and discussion.
