HARRISONBURG, Va -- Virginia leads the nation in the number of legally owned fully automatic machine guns. Eric Korn, a local gun expert from American Firearms Training, said it is most likely a combination of reasons.
The sale of machine guns is federally regulated, but Virginia does not have any additional state regulations.
Korn also attributes the sales to Virginia's large population, the generally high income and what he said is “a gun friendly culture” in the state.
"What do individuals need to do with a weapon that is fully automatic? That is, target shoot, train, practice and have fun."
Korn said fully automatic machine guns are rarely used to commit crimes because they are so big. These types of guns are also very expensive. Korn said for the average person to buy a new one, it could be somewhere around $15,000.
