CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- It was the eve of last week's special session when reality hit Speaker Tim Miley in his quest to lead West Virginia's House of Delegates.

The Harrison County Democrat tells The Associated Press that it was then that he began to appreciate how his role would change.

The former Judiciary Committee chairman became speaker Tuesday in a close vote that followed party lines. Miley said his fellow delegates have allowed him a great honor but also an incredible responsibility. Many people will now look to him to lead the House in helping to move West Virginia forward.

Miley said his upcoming tasks include keeping regular West Virginians in mind while lobbyists mingle with legislators. He also faces a large Republican minority frustrated with how Democrats have run the House.
